One of the most troubling experiences I've had in youth sports. During games, coaches were openly encouraging players to take cheap shots and intentionally try to injure opposing athletes rather than focusing on skill, competition, or sportsmanship. During a game, I witnessed a coach instruct players to target an opposing player who was wearing a knee brace. The coach specifically directed players to go after the injured knee. This wasn't a comment about playing physical defense or competing hard, it was a deliberate attempt to exploit and potentially worsen a young athlete's injury. The culture of a team starts with its coaches, and in this case the message being sent was a complete disregard for player safety, respect for opponents, and the values youth sports are supposed to teach. For families looking for an environment that develops athletes the right way, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere. Youth sports should teach teamwork, discipline, and respect for opponents. Unfortunately, that was not the culture I witnessed here.
